THE WRAITHWOOD WEAVER

Thomas Lanthripp

I POKED THE CAMPFIRE with a stick, wincing as the flames crackled and spat. We had been out here for hours. No phones and no electronics allowed at Camp New You! So, there was no way to see how much time had passed. The sun had long since set though, and the night only grew darker and colder.

Ava tightened her grip on her dark coat, her fingers pale, and her brown eyes flickered with the firelight. “Can’t we head back to camp already? I'm freezing my...” Ava paused, glancing at the eerily grinning guidance counselor plopped on a log across from us. “...my uh, bottom off.”

“Ava's right,” I said, tossing the stick into the blaze and rubbing my hands together for warmth. “We've been out here just sitting around. Shouldn't we be heading back now?”

Bryce, sitting next to me, looked equally cold and miserable. I glanced around and noticed the other campfires a few yards off, at least five in total, each surrounded by clusters of campers. The whole camp was out here in the woods tonight, but for what reason, I still didn't understand. I wondered how many of them were as cold and confused as we were.

“You know what helps keep your mind off of things?” the counselor asked, his fingers tapping the rifle resting in his lap. “Good ol’ fashioned campfire stories.”

For wildlife, that had to be the reason for the gun I figured. Every counselor hauled one with them the past few days, never letting them go. Yet, despite the heavy set of arms, nobody, to my knowledge, ever saw any kind of wildlife around these parts. Not even a squirrel or bird.

“Really? I haven't heard one since I was a kid,” Ava asked, her hands trembling as she fumbled around for a marshmallow in the bag crumbled by her boots. She picked one of the last from the bag and stuck it on a stick before holding it out to the fire.

“Better than doing nothing, I guess,” Bryce mumbled, his breath visible in the chilly air. “Anyone got a good one?”

A few shuffling feet, nervous glances and nobody said a word. I watched the campfire nearby flicker, hushed voices drifting from the other campers. Their vague silhouettes moved in the darkness. I counted five other campfires, each a small island of light in the sea of night. My watchful gaze was broken by a hushed voice.

“I’ve got one,” Matthew said, raising a hand. “It's about a camp cursed by a cruel and bloodthirsty monster. A camp full of teens who had no idea what they signed up for.”

Ava raised her eyebrows, glancing towards me and I shrugged back.

“The campers were unaware of a certain legend. About the Wraithwood Weaver,” Matthew continued.

“Wraithwood...like the Wraithwood around us?” Bryce asked, trying to scoff at the semblance of names but there lingered a hint of fear in his tone.

“Are you going to let him tell his story?” Ava asked as Bryce threw up his hands in defeat.
